Friday... For Some
After years of saying "I've eventually got to read that," I'm finally knee deep in The Watchmen. I'm also working graveyard shift, so I don't have a ton of free time right now. I'll probably devote the remainder of my free time this weekend to reading this acclaimed graphic novel, so this'll be the last you'll hear from me for a while.Just a few things worth mentioning:
- Tis the fluffy thing that should not be. Who among you has the heart to face The Plush Cthulhu?
- Wal-Mart has cut the price of generic prescription drugs to four bucks. I can't wait to see how the capitalism-haters will spin this. Baaaad old Wal-Mart. Bad, Bad, BAD! And, of course, they will find a way to spin it. Consider this... the other day at Wal-Mart I paid $2.09 a gallon for gas. Good news? Not according to the mainstream media. Well, of course it can't be good news... there's an election in less than two months, after all!
- The other night at work I mulled the idea of doing a post along the lines of "The Ten Greatest Albums That Nobody Has Ever Heard. Then I came home from work that morning and saw that MCF had done pretty much the same thing. It's a good post, and you'll find my ten albums listed in the comments.
- I've seen this item on the differences between men and women before, but seeing it again at The Burr In The Burgh made me laugh. Go read it, it's funny.
- A conversation about a conversation at The Unseen Blogger's caused me to remember one of my favorite ruminations from P.J. O'Rourke. I've posted it before, but it's worth posting again:
I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat.
God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle-aged male, a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men strictly accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well-being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on literally everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God's heavenly country club.
Santa Claus is another matter. He's cute. He's nonthreatening. He's always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who's been naughty and who's been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without thought of a quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he's famously generous to the poor.
Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one:
There is no such thing as Santa Claus.

"Gas prices are too low"???
That pretty much verifies that the left is the party of "nothing is ever good, vote for us and we'll take your money and tell you how to live."
I can see it - one day - the world is completely at peace and the left cries "A world without conflict does not search the depth of human meaning! We must have a war. Bush lied, people finally didn't die!"

the closest I can come to graphic novels is the various Sandman epics. they're amazing, touching, scary, darkly beautiful and among the few books I was able to keep when we moved. If you call 300 or so, few. And I do.
Watchmen is a masterpiece, one of many I got to later than I should have. I think I was in my late 20s when I finally read it. I'd love to see a live adaptation of it, but a 2-3 hour movie couldn't do it justice. Maybe it is best left in the medium of origin along with other masterpieces like DKR and Preacher.
