- Why An Exit Date Won't Work
I've never seen anything that sums up exactly why we can't set an exit date for our troops in Iraq better than this cartoon:
Pretty simple concept, right? And yet the Democrats don't get it. I saw this at Bullwinkle Blog
- Carnival Of Cinema IV
Nehring's latest round-up is up. - Uh ... Ooops?
Looking back over the comments from yesterday's post, I wonder if I owe anyone an apology. To me, it was all a big joke. I seriously won't watch Heroes, and I was serious about my reasons, but the whole issue isn't a serious one for me. I think, though, that some of the comments indicate that there might be other people who take TV shows far more seriously than I do. If I stepped on any toes, I'm sorry.

That might be true, but that wasn't it. I don't care if people like the same shows I do or not. If you refuse to even try a show, that's totally your choice. I just didn't like being put down for nursing at the "glass teat". I don't believe the medium determines the quality of the entertainment produced, and gems could be found on the small screen as well as the large one, or in a book, or on the radio, etc. TV is a longer commitment but a lot of shows DO have closure providing finales. No harm done though, and no apologies needed; it's all good.
Great cartoon; totally nails the point.

I'm over it.....SO over it.
but I don't get the cartoon---but it's probably hopeless for me to try if i don,t take that course in contemporary US politics

Well, I was surprised at your reaction. It hit me totally out of the blue. I think you must have assumed that entry about Heroes was directed at you, and it wasn't. I use my blog to vent and I try to do it in a funny way, but the problem with that is that real people read it and can end up with the wrong idea... and then something you posted with the intentions of getting something off your chest, something really to do with person X, has all-of-a-sudden offended person Y. Then you end up feeling worse instead of better, feeling like what you thought was a fairly harmless attempt to vent ended up hurting the feelings of someone you've never really even met, so every godamn thing is just backfiring in your face. That's a rhetorical "you." Anyway, at the moment, I just kinda have a "fuck it" attitude about blogging. In fact, I'm going to take a break from it for a while. We all have a "glass teat," and mine has a keyboard instead of a remote control, and using this particular version of the "glass teat" isn't really helping me anymore.

There's always going to be someone oversensitive (hi) reading more into the written word. Please don't quit blogging over it. :/ Between Rhodester and Wendy, and to some degree Kelly, everybody's dropping out of the blogosphere like flies. Not you too...

Everyone gets defensive when something they do is attacked so vehemently. I feel the same way when you go on a tirade about reality shows. And I'm sure others feel the same way when I vehemently attack something they enjoy. You vent, then the offended/defensive person vents, so isn't it all even?
I sure hope you don't quit/take a break from blogging, although I'm really in no position to say anything.

People, let's not be hasty. We don't need Darrell.......just kidding.
I completely understand the feeling of needing a break sometimes. I think that what everyone forgets is that we all have real lives and real jobs and the real stress and pressure that goes along with it all.
Typing and talking are two totally different things and cannot always convey the way we feel. I sometimes fret over a post I make because after I read what I write 4 to 5 times, I constantly second guess myself. It's a pressure we put on ourselves to be witty or just to entertain our freinds in the blogoshpere. And it's totally unecessary.
This is supposed to be fun, and you know what? It still is. Darrell can take a sabatical until he's ready to join us again. I'm sure that when he decides to come back(hopefully in a few days) he will be refreshed and full of the same smart/funny wit that we all enjoy.
BTW...I put up a thank you to Darrell on my blog before I read all these comments. I hope it doesn't look like I did it for the purpose of bringing back Darrell.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Everyone else has already said what i would have, and i already know, from last Lent, that i can weather Darrell-withdrawal,so it's easy for me to say you should do what makes you happy. I can type through my tears.
"In fact, I'm going to take a break from it for a while."
The Unseen One misses Darrell's posts. The Unseen One now has to go to other southern conservative blogs to get his dose of southern conservatism. The Unseen One has been sorely disappointed, as these other blogs don't compare to Darrell's.
Welcome to "talk about theirselves in the third person" day!

It's a great cartoon, a fair point... but it's not the big issue is it? Do you really think being there is in your national interest?
Actually I don't get the cartoon because:
A) We aren't the police. No one appointed us, asked us, elected us, or is paying us to be the police. Yet policing is what we're doing.
B) By setting an exit date we are telling the government of Iraq, "Shape up by x date so that you can handle your own bidness." If the "crooks" realize that the gov't isn't going to shape up how is that our problem? By not setting a deadline of some sort we're enabling Iraq to sit on its thumbs.
