Have I Heard That Before?
It's a common observation among heavy metal (and rock) fans: "Hey, that song sounds just like that other song!" Sometimes this observation leads to arguments about who is or isn't guilty of stealing riffs, especially if it's particularly accurate.
A YouTube user called BakNBlack has put together a number of clips that feature back-to-back comparisons of a number of songs. Some of his observations are surprising, especially if I was previously familiar with both songs but never noticed the similarities. BakNBlack says he isn't accusing anyone of ripping off anyone else, he's just making note of the similarities in the good natured, fun spirit of rock and roll.
Here's his most recent clip:
He has quite a few more if you enjoyed that.

I remember this dude in college once started playing About a Girl by Nirvana, but subbed the lyrics with "IIIII only know three chooords!" over and over, and it worked well.
I would say a lot of today's music is overly influenced by the past or in some cases executed solely by posers, but I like how this video demonstrated how these chords and structures have been picked up modified and passed on for decades. I was not expecting that Bowie song to go in to Metallica for example; probably the biggest surprise.
Liked the reveal at the end with Ozzie's guitarist being in that 2007 band playing almost the same thing. :)

I agree with MCF. The Metallica shocked me as well as Iron Maiden. One that I always enjoyed was Metallica's "Call of Cthulu" and Megadeth's "Hanger 18." Both were written by Megadeth's frontman... but one is finger picked and the other is strummed :)
These are right up there with Pink Floyd and Phantom of the Opera :)

Oh, and Steel Dragon was the fictional band from the movie Rock Star. I wonder if the song was done as a homage. I'm pretty sure the movie is based on the Judas Priest story.
