Monday, April 16, 2007Because of today's horrible events in Blacksburg, I think it would be inappropriate for me to post at my blog for a while. Most of my posts are trivial, and sometimes I write stuff that's downright irresponsible. Posting the kinds of things I write while so many people are suffering just down the road seems insensitive at best. Thanks to those of you who sent e-mail asking if Wendy and the family and I were OK. We're fine. So you'll know, Blacksburg is about two hours from here, but it's always been an element of my life. One of my life-long friends went to Virginia Tech. One of my old girlfriends went to VT, too. Over the years I've worked with, gone to church with, and known more Tech alumni than I can count, and I've been on campus for events, concerts, and just to hang out more times than I can remember. If, as we hope, Wendy is able to get her Master's eventually, it'll be at Tech. Today's news felt like a kick in the gut for me. In the meantime, if you, like me, wish there was something you can do … there is. The Red Cross is on the scene doing everything that they can, and they need all the support they can get. The Red Cross Chapter serving Blacksburg can be reached at (540) - 443 - 3606. Their website is www.redcrossnrv.org. Beyond that, just hug your family and tell them you love them. We always tell ourselves that things like this don't happen here, but, sometimes, they do. -Darrell
